John McGrath was elected into the Western Australian Legislative Assembly as the Member for South Perth on 26 February 2005 and re-elected in the 2008, 2013 and 2017 election.

John was born in Fremantle and was educated at Hamilton Hill Primary School and John Curtin Senior High School. He is married with two children and lives locally in the electorate of South Perth.

Prior to entering Parliament, John was a senior journalist at the West Australian Newspapers. During his career at “The West” he was a Senior Journalist, Sports Editor, Racing Editor and Chief Football Writer

Before the change of Government in March 2017 he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier with responsibility over the Perth Stadium project. Following the 2017 state election, John was appointed as the Shadow Minister for Racing and Gaming; Sport and Recreation.

Nomenclature:
South Perth derives its name from its location south of Perth. The area was identified as a separate suburb of Perth as early as 1831, and was the site of Perth's first mill in 1833.
