x x Josie Farrer is a Kija woman born in Moola Bulla station, near Halls Creek in the Kimberley Region. She has lived in Halls Creek since 1955. Josie works hard to give her community more opportunities to connect with Indigenous culture, law and land in a meaningful way. Josie has served as a Director with the Kimberley Land Council, and as a Councillor on the Shire of Halls Creek for 16 years, including seven years as the Shire President. She is also a member and active volunteer/artist of the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre. Josie has served on a number of regional boards and on both state and federal committees, including seven years as the deputy, and occasionally holding the role of acting Chair of the Kimberley Development Commission. Area (km2) 419,078; Number of Electors: 16,867 (9 March 2015) Western Australian Electoral Commission. State Electorate Information. Nomenclature: Named after the Kimberley District. Following discovery of the district by Alexander Forrest in 1879 it was decided to open the new district for settlement. The Governor, Sir William Robinson, sent copies of suggested land regulations to the Earl of Kimberley, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and in his dispatch said that it was proposed that the new country should be called the Kimberley District.
