Tackling the Tyranny of Distance

Living in a state as vast as Western Australia can sometimes make it a challenge to provide opportunities for your students to visit the Parliament of Western Australia.

POWA has just introduced the Country School Travel Rebate, which gives schools within the Regional Travel Zone access to support funding. For guidelines and eligibility requirements.

POWA to the Regions

Hot on the heels of last year’s visits to the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions, once again the Parliamentary Education Office is already planning this year’s regional schedule.

The Regional Outreach Program consists of a Pop up Parliament, providing students in country areas the chance to immerse themselves in the process of passing legislation. For the very first time, our team will also be extending this exciting program to selected regional secondary schools.

Professional Learning POWA

Primary and Secondary teachers recently got the chance to attend the Parliament of Western Australia’s Professional Learning workshops. Held in the Legislative Assembly, participants were given a preview of the new Civics and Citizenship resources developed by the PEO.

Each teacher also received a POWA Pass, a digital data card, embedded with all of the new teaching and learning resources. Feedback from the sessions has been extremely positive and due to large demand, further Professional Learning Opportunities will be offered in Terms 1 and 3 of 2018.

The PEO has developed curriculum linked companion study guides for each episode of the Key to Your House, the Parliament of Western Australia’s 13-part documentary on the politics, the process and the people who make the laws of our state. This resource will assist students in unlocking the many facets of Civics and Citizenship in an engaging and immersive manner. The Key to Your House is a wonderful resource for either pre visit preparation, post visit revision or an alternative learning mode if you are unable to bring your class on a tour.

To Toodyay District High School and Balcatta Senior High School

The PEO was excited to welcome students from Toodyay District High School and Balcatta Senior High School in the final week of term 4 who took part in the filming of parliamentary role-plays.

These role-plays which can be access on our website, provide age appropriate entry points to both primary and secondary students. Featuring students in the roles of Members of Parliament, these resources are wonderful teaching tools to assist you in demystifying parliamentary process.

Booking, Bags and Buses
Demand by primary and secondary schools in visiting Parliament House continues to grow. This increased patronage has led to the need for new protocols. Visiting schools are advised that with the exception of medical kits, student bags can no longer be brought into Parliament House. For further details and to book a school visit.

Learning Made Easy

Thanks to the talented students of North Metropolitan TAFE, an exciting new resource is available on the POWA website.
