World Bee Day 2018

Parliament House Bee Hives

In November 2015 Parliament House established an apiary of three bee hives. At that time, Parliament House was the first Australian Parliament to host hives.

The hives were installed as part of an initiative to raise awareness of the plight of honey bees and the importance of bees in the community.

The hives are maintained by a hobbyist beekeeper. Each colony, on average, consists of approximately 30, 000 bee—which grows to up to 60,000 bees in the high season. Parliament’s hives have produced over 500 kilograms of honey, much of which is used in the Parliament House kitchens.
