SynopsisIn summary, the purpose of this Bill is to -
  • provide assistance to victims of crime by such measures as increasing the maximum award to $75,000, providing for interim awards, and providing for future medical costs;
  • consolidate the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 1985 and all previous legislation into one Act;
  • clarify technical issues and simplify current legislation;
  • ensure better targeting of scarce resources so that only deserving and qualified applicants will receive compensation; and
  • improve recovery from offenders.

Royal Assent given 15 Dec 2003 as Act No. 77 of 2003. This Act comes into operation on a day fixed by Proclamation (see Assent and Commencement information for Acts)
