Local Government Amendment Bill 1997

Bill No.96

Synopsis
The purpose of this Bill is to make a number of minor amendments to the Local Government Act 1995 including correcting an unintended clause which would inadvertently allow some non-Australians to become council members at elections. A new provision allows for the appointment of a Commissioner to run a Local Government in a situation where all of the council members resign. The Bill also includes an amendment to section 3.14 to ensure that where this provision is used the Governor’s amendment or revocation may operate immediately and not be subject to the normal 14 days delay for the operation of local laws after gazettal.
