Local Government Amendment Bill 2013

SynopsisThe purpose of this Bill is to amend the Local Government Act 1995 to provide for the following:
  • allowing the Minister to advise the Local Government Advisory Board on any Government policy that may be relevant to a particular inquiry;
  • increasing the discretion of the Advisory Board regarding submission periods;
  • expanding the membership of the Advisory Board to provide for community representation;
  • providing the Local Government Standards Panel with the discretionary power to dismiss frivolous or vexatious complaints;
  • providing for the withdrawal of complaints made to the Standards Panel;
  • removing an electoral offence which is no longer necessary;
  • clarifying aspects of the recent legislative reforms relating to elected member fees and allowances; and
  • ensuring consistency in provisions which limit the termination payments of local government CEOs and officers to one year's remuneration.

This Act comes into operation on the day on which it receives the Royal Assent
