2004 marks the centenary of the Parliament House building. On 28 July 1904, the ‘new’ Parliament House of Western Australia was officially opened. This followed the laying of a foundation stone on 31 July 1902. The original building, completed and opened in 1904, faces west onto Harvest Terrace and was constructed of granite and freestone. The extension of the building that now faces out over the city and river was not completed until 1964.
A series of events will take place throughout 2004 to celebrate the centenary of the building with an emphasis on history, education and bringing the Parliament to the people.
- On Monday 19 January 2004, the celebrations for the centenary of the Parliament building commenced with the raising of three State flags and two Centenary flags at the front of Parliament House, overlooking the city and river. One State flag and one Centenary flag will be raised every day for the remainder of the Centenary year.
- Also on Monday 19 January 2004, to mark the centenary, a first day issue stamp and envelope was launched at Parliament House.
- On Friday 23 January 2004, the 100th Birthday of Francis Drake Willmott was celebrated at Parliament House. Mr Willmott, a former member of the Legislative Council, is the first known former member to celebrate their 100th birthday and the centenary of Parliament House made the birthday even more significant.
- On 23-24 March 2004, the Legislative Assembly will hold regional sittings in Albany and on 28-29 September, the Legislative Council will hold regional sittings in Kalgoorlie/Boulder. Student Parliaments in both centres will also take place on the Thursday following the sittings of each House. On Monday 23 August 2004 there will be a Statewide Student Parliament, held in Parliament House.
- Of particular interest to the public will be the People’s Open Day at Parliament House on Sunday 4 April 2004. The building will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm and food and entertainment will be provided in the Parliament’s attractive grounds and surrounds.
