ECU Broadcasting students produce video tribute for Edith Cowan

Students filming in the Legislative Assembly

To commemorate the centenary of Edith Cowan’s election this year, the Parliament of Western Australia partnered with Post Graduate Broadcasting Students at Edith Cowan University to produce a video tribute to the life and legacy of Australia’s first female member of Parliament.
The collaboration gave the students hands-on experience in their field by ‘learning at the legislature’. They gained valuable insights into project management, honed their interviewing skills and got experience in the logistics involved in an outside broadcast. They also practised their technical and editing skills.
The students were also privy to ‘behind the scenes’ at Parliament House, having been granted special permission to film in the Legislative Assembly Chamber. Using resources from the #WAParliament’s website, historical photographs from the WA State Library and ECU’s archival collection, and footage from their interviews with some high profile members of Parliament and community leaders, the students created an engaging tribute in the form of a short video.
The cast for the re-enactment comprised volunteer actors from the WA performing arts community and members of the Rotary Club of Cambridge, with costumes borrowed from ECU’s Screen Academy and Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAPPA).
WA Parliament acknowledges and thanks the contributions of all the stakeholders involved in this community engagement initiative.
