WA Parliament recently hosted the 39th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Australia and Pacific Regional Conference. President of the Legislative Council and Conference Chair, Hon Alanna Clohesy MLC, said she was ‘absolutely thrilled to chair’ this year's theme of 'Parliament, People and Pandemics' which was officially opened with a welcome to country ceremony, performed by respected Noongar Elder, Dr Richard Walley AM; followed by a keynote presentation from leading social justice expert, Professor Colleen Hayward, who also highlighted the importance of Parliamentary democracy in the Commonwealth and in society.
One of the main highlights of the four day conference was a hybrid discussion panel featuring Aboriginal MPs from WA, Victoria and South Australia who reflected upon their personal experiences as Members of Parliament and the significance of equal representation for their communities.
The conference was the first Australian CPA conference to be held as a ‘hybrid’ conference, with 27 delegates and five observers participating remotely while 14 delegates and five observers attended the conference at Parliament House. The learnings from this conference will help inform future hybrid conferences.
The CPA's 180 Commonwealth Parliaments and Legislatures collaborate as a community to strengthen the Commonwealth’s commitment to high standards of democratic governance.
