Current ePetitions for the Legislative Assembly

Regional Power Outages and Compensation

To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled. We, the undersigned, say

We express concern at the January 2024 power outages, which impacted over 30,000 households and business in the Goldfields, Wheatbelt and Perth Hills.
These outages lasted for several days during a heatwave, and also had a significant impact on telecommunications, leaving more than 30 communities unable to call Triple Zero, and left many residents unable to access information, contact family members, study, or do business.
The estimated impact of these outages on the business community is in excess of $10 million, yet despite the failure of the State Government to ensure their back-up generators were fit-for-purpose, no assistance has been offered to impacted businesses.

Now we ask the Legislative Assembly

1. Review the State Government's support following extended outages to ensure households and businesses who are impacted by outages are appropriately supported and fairly compensated; and
2. Undertake an independent inquiry into the January 2024 outages to consider the preparedness and response of the State Government, Western Power and Telstra to these outages and make recommendations to improve the performance of the regional electricity network.
