To the President and Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled. We the undersigned request that the Legislative Council ...
draw your attention to the urgent need to recognise Human Composting — also known as Natural Organic Reduction (NOR) or terramation — as a lawful and meaningful death care option, alongside burial, cremation and natural burial.
Human Composting is a safe, dignified, and environmentally responsible process that transforms the human body into nutrient-rich soil. This living soil can then nurture trees, gardens, or natural landscapes — creating space-efficient, life-affirming memorials that remain compatible with existing traditions of remembrance. The process is currently permitted in 13 U.S.A. states and in Germany.
Unlike existing options, Human Composting can be carbon neutral and even carbon negative, depending on how the resulting soil is utilised. It offers Australians an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy of environmental regeneration — a return to the earth that truly gives back. As land availability decreases, environmental goals tighten, and community values evolve, there is a growing public desire for sustainable, scalable, and meaningful alternatives in death care.
Human Composting uniquely meets these modern needs. We therefore call on the Legislative Council to request the WA Government to: Recognise Human Composting as a lawful method of body disposition in Western Australia; and Develop appropriate regulations — in consultation with emerging providers, community advocates, and industry professionals — to ensure Human Composting is delivered safely, ethically, and transparently, upholding best-practice
And your petitioners as in duty bound, will ever pray.
