To the President and Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled. We the undersigned ...
Strongly oppose Heidelberg Materials’ proposal to clear over 37 acres of untouched protected Banksia Woodland on Banksia Road, Oldbury for sand mining.
The proposed mine site is just 300-500m from nearby homes, contrary to EPA buffer guidelines. The serious health and safety risks for local residents include silica dust, increased truck traffic, and excessive noise. Yet concerns about these risks and the inadequacy of the project’s mitigation measures remain largely unaddressed.
The area is a known foraging ground for endangered Black Cockatoos, and any clearing of the 30% of Banksia woodland remaining on the Perth Coastal Plain, increases their risk of extinction. The project’s environmental reports also overlook the essential ecological corridor the bushland forms with adjacent wetlands.
The project’s decade-old approval reflects past ecological and social contexts and outdated scientific understandings of public health and environmental risks. The government now has the opportunity—and responsibility—to prevent it. Our natural resources must be managed with integrity, care, and foresight—for the sake of our communities and future generations.
We ask the Legislative Council to oppose this project and urge the Government to preserve what remains of this irreplaceable ecosystem.
And your petitioners as in duty bound, will ever pray.
