President's biography

Hon Alanna Clohesy MLC was elected as Member for East Metropolitan Region in March 2013 and re-elected in 2017 and again in 2021. She was elected President of the Legislative Council on 25 May 2021, only the second woman to be elected to the position.

The President was born in Sea Lake, Victoria and holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Social Policy) with Honours.

Before entering Parliament, the President worked extensively in social policy research, advocacy, service delivery and management. This includes in the disability, mental health and women’s sectors. She also worked in the tourism industry. During her postgraduate studies in public policy, women’s health, welfare policy and feminist theory she worked as a lecturer in the School of International, Community and Cultural Studies at Edith Cowan University.

In 2004, the President was appointed Deputy Director of People with Disability Australia Incorporated working on developing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The President has served as President of the Western Australian Labor Party from 2010 to 2014, and was Secretary of the State Parliamentary Labor Party from 2013 to 2017.

Once elected in 2013, the President served as a Deputy Chair of Committees. From 2017 the President held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health; Mental Health as well as being Chair of the Joint Audit Committee and the Standing Committee on Estimates and Financial Operations.
