Legislation introduced during World War One


After the announcement of war by Prime Minister Joseph Cook, Premier Scaddan addressed the House on 5 August 1914 outlining that he proposed to introduce a range of legislation to support the war effort.

One of the first pieces of legislation in response to the announcement of war was aimed at curtailing war profiteering and hoarding.

  • The Government took immediate steps on the announcement of war to introduce the Supply Bill 1914 for the temporary advance of £230,820.
  • Foodstuffs Commission Act 1914 - An Act relating to the distribution, export, and prices of foodstuffs and other commodities, and to compel the supplying of information in relation thereto.

  • Naval and Military Absentees Relief Act 1915 - An Act to grant to members of the Naval and Military Forces absent from Australia on active service relief in Western Australia against discrimination applicable to absentees.
  • War Council Act 1915- An Act to enable the Governor to establish a War Council, to define the powers of such council, and for related purposes.

  • The Western Australian Day Funds Act 1916 - An Act to declare the purposes to which the funds raised by the movement known as "The Western Australian Day for the Sick and Wounded" may be lawfully applied.

Sir Harry Colebatch
  • Mental Treatment Act 1917 - An Act to facilitate the treatment of mental disorder of recent origin arising from wounds, shock, and other causes.
