Visiting Parliament

Watch live from the public gallery

You are welcome to watch the debates in both houses of Parliament by visiting the public galleries. There are no booking requirements and it is free to attend.

The galleries are open Tuesday to Thursday when the houses are sitting. Although the houses usually sit on the same day, there are some weeks when only one house is sitting. Check the Sitting Calendar for sitting dates and times.

Visitors wishing to attend the Legislative Council will need to do so via the northern stairs, off Harvest Terrace and the Legislative Assembly Chamber via the southern stairs.

People with accessibility constraints should enter via the ramp at the main (eastern) entrance of Parliament House facing the Mitchell Freeway.

Question Time

Question time is one process, amongst many, undertaken by Parliament for effective governance in the state.

Question time is held in the Legislative Assembly each sitting Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, starting at 2.00pm for approximately 40 minutes and in the Legislative Council at 4.30pm for approximately 30 minutes.

Question time is when ministers (or ministers representing ministers in the other house) are asked questions by members on government policies and actions. It is an important process for ensuring government is accountable to the Parliament and to the people of Western Australia.

Committees

Both houses have established committees to assist them in carrying out their functions of legislating, monitoring and reviewing legislation, government administration and expenditure, gathering information and publicising issues.

Committees comprise members of Parliament appointed by the house in which they sit. They undertake detailed work on behalf of the house(s) and report their findings and any recommendations to the house.

Committees often hold evidence-gathering hearings with government, business and community. Members of the community can view hearings that are open to the public. Some hearings are also broadcast through the Watch and Listen page of the Parliament Website. See Upcoming Hearings on the Committee landing page for further information.

Committee hearings are generally held on a Wednesday morning of a sitting week. Committees can hold hearings at other times and locations, so please confirm before attending.
