Special inquiry—2025 state election
Brief ministerial statement
Mr David Michael (Balcatta—Minister for Electoral Affairs) (1:15 pm): I would like to advise the house that a special inquiry into the administration of the 2025 state election is now underway. The inquiry, headed by former WA Governor and respected barrister Malcolm McCusker, will cover matters including the resourcing, staffing and management arrangements at polling booths, the distribution of ballot papers and the counting of votes. I thank members opposite for the input into the terms of reference that will guide Mr McCusker's work in this area. A report outlining the inquiry's findings is scheduled to be finalised by 30 June 2025. I am sure that members in this chamber have been contacted by constituents in relation to the election. I encourage those constituents to make a submission to the inquiry. This can be done via email to submissionsSE@psc.wa.gov.au. Submissions are open until 4:00 pm on Friday, 9 May. Further information is also available online. Although the final result of the election represented a clear outcome, Western Australian electors deserve a clear, convenient and straightforward process when they exercise their right to vote. I look forward to Mr McCusker's findings and recommendations.
