Government Regional Office Housing developments

Brief ministerial statement

Mr John Carey (Perth—Minister for Housing and Works) (1:15 pm): I rise to inform the house about two Government Regional Office Housing developments. First, an agreement between the state government and a Pilbara-based building company will see the construction of nine new GROH dwellings in Karratha. Under the agreement, West Pilbara Holdings will construct nine dwellings in the Karratha suburb of Nickol, and, upon completion, they will be on long-term lease to GROH to house regional government workers.

Build-to-lease is one of the levers GROH uses to add to regional housing supply and ensure critical government services in the regions. The well-located homes will have a modern and functional design to meet the needs of families or shared singles providing government services in the region. Construction of the two-bedroom, two-bathroom homes has already commenced, and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026. These nine new GROH dwellings in Karratha will provide secure housing to vital government workers in delivering critical services to the local community.

Additionally, when I was up in Broome earlier this month, I toured four new GROH homes that are in the final stages of construction. The four-bedroom homes have been delivered by Broome-based builders, B&S Impact Constructions and CWD Builders–Developers, and were built to a seven-star energy efficiency rating. The GROH program provides housing for government employees, including teachers, nurses, police and child protection workers in regional locations to ensure delivery of essential government services. The Cook Labor government is ensuring that regional communities have access to these workers, and we are committed to bolstering the GROH program by $104 million in this term of government.
