Peel Health Campus redevelopment
154. Mr David Bolt to the Minister for Health Infrastructure:
I refer to the initial $152 million redevelopment plan for the Peel Health Campus announced in 2020, and I acknowledge the subsequent delays and modifications.
(1) Can the minister give assurances to the residents of Mandurah and the Murray region that the project will be completed by the 2027 timeframe?
(2) Will the budget of $152 million need to be increased, and, if so, by how much?
Mr John Carey replied:
(1)–(2) I will give the member this guarantee: it will stay in public hands. His side, at every opportunity, privatises and cuts services every time. What a cheek! The cheek of Murray–Wellington!
Several members interjected.
Mr John Carey: The cheek of the Liberals! They cut; they slash—that is their record in government with health. They privatise, with its detrimental effects—
Several members interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Carry on, minister.
Mr John Carey: Thank you, Speaker.
They cut, they privatise and they destroy health services. That is their record or—
Several members interjected.
Mr John Carey: I mean, it is extraordinary. We should all just sit down and let the Leader of the Liberal Party give complete monologues about anything he wants to, and we will call that the new Parliament of Western Australia—just reflections of Basil Zempilas: shutting women's shelters, buying second-rate astronauts, blowing travel budgets—
Several members interjected.
The Speaker: Minister!
Mr Liam Staltari: Point of order!
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition, there is a point of order.
Point of order
Mr Liam Staltari: I refer to standing order 78, relevance. This tirade has nothing to do with the specific question on the redevelopment that the member for Murray–Wellington asked.
The Speaker: Thank you, member. I shall not uphold that point of order. The minister is responding to the question, and he can do so as he sees fit. Carry on, minister.
Questions without notice resumed
Mr John Carey: I mean, it makes it very difficult when you have the Leader of the Liberals screaming, yelling and interjecting at any—
Several members interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Cottesloe! Carry on, minister.
Mr John Carey: You can just feel the agitation! I mean, seriously. The whole opposition needs to take a valium and have a glass of wine!
Several members interjected.
Mr John Carey: He is doing it again!
Mr Basil Zempilas interjected.
The Speaker: Leader of the Opposition, please stop interjecting.
Mr John Carey: I want to assure Western Australians that we are committed to the project at $152 million, to provide the upgrades that are needed for the Peel region.
155. Mr David Bolt to the Minister for Health Infrastructure:
I have a supplementary question. How does the government plan to address community concerns regarding service delivery and infrastructure adequacy during the extended redevelopment period?
Mr John Carey replied:
We are absolutely committed to this project, but I can tell the member the following. We know the federal Liberal member who has mastered the art of misinformation on the Peel Health Campus. We are absolutely committed to the delivery of the project.
