Women's and babies' hospital

Brief ministerial statement

Mr John Carey (Perth—Minister for Health Infrastructure) (1:09 pm): The new women's and babies' hospital project reached a major milestone on 28 May with the signing of the managing contract to deliver the new maternity hospital.

The Cook Labor government is delivering world-class health infrastructure at an unprecedented level. We know that as our population grows, so too does the demand on our health services. With increasing migration into WA and as our population continues to age, we are planning for the future. The government is committed to ensuring our health system is as strong as it can be. That is why the Cook government's contract with Webuild to deliver the $1.8 billion project is so important. Webuild is a global leader in design and construction of large infrastructure projects, including hundreds of healthcare facilities and one of Western Australia's most significant construction projects, the Metronet airport line.

The project will replace the century-old King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women and expand services and choice for women, newborns and families across WA. It includes a world-class maternity hospital, two new multideck car parks within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct, a major expansion of the Osborne Park Hospital and an expansion of neonatal services at the Perth Children's Hospital. Construction is planned to start later this year, with the building of the first multideck car park. A contract for this component of the project was awarded to the Georgiou Group in January 2025.

Works are also underway on a number of temporary offsite car parks to support workers at the hospital precinct while the new multideck car park is built. The state government has been working extremely closely with Webuild through robust negotiations to finalise this contract so that we get on with the job and deliver this important project to the WA community.

The new women's and babies' hospital project represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform health care for women, babies and families. It represents an opportunity for us to provide expectant and new mothers with the environment they, their babies and their families need to thrive during pregnancy, birth and post-birth. I look forward to continuing updating the house as this project progresses.
