Acting Deputy Electoral Commissioner—Rebecca Hamilton

Brief ministerial statement

Mr David Michael (Balcatta—Minister for Electoral Affairs) (12:08 pm): I wish to advise the house that the Governor, Hon Chris Dawson AC APM, has appointed Ms Rebecca Hamilton as acting Deputy Electoral Commissioner, effective from 30 June 2025 until 31 December 2025. Ms Hamilton will undertake this role while Deputy Commissioner Courtney Barron is on leave.

Ms Hamilton is a highly respected senior public servant with many years' experience in the public sector. She brings excellent skills to the role and, more broadly, to the Western Australia Electoral Commission. She is currently the Road Safety Commission's director of innovation and technology, and she has also held senior roles in housing and Corrective Services, and in the Departments of Health, the Premier and Cabinet, Treasury and Finance. As acting Deputy Commissioner, Miss Hamilton will work with the acting Commissioner of the Western Australian Electoral Commission and the Western Australian Electoral Commission team to oversee the upcoming local government elections in October this year. She will also work with the acting commissioner on the implementation of any recommendations arising from the special inquiry into the planning and delivery of the 2025 WA state election.

I thank the Leader of the Opposition and the Leaders of the Nationals WA, the Greens (WA), the Legalise Cannabis Western Australia Party, One Nation Western Australia, the Animal Justice Party and the Australian Christians, all of whom were consulted prior to Ms Hamilton's appointment being made.
