Geraldton Health Campus—Redevelopment

Brief ministerial statement

Mr John Carey (Perth—Minister for Health Infrastructure) (12:09 pm): I rise to inform the house that the redevelopment of Geraldton Health Campus has reached a new milestone, with four central energy plant modules now installed on site. Built in Malaga, the modules will supply heating, cooling and electricity across the health campus through a centralised system. The innovative modular design delivers a smarter, cleaner approach to construction by building the units off site in a controlled environment to minimise disruption and speed up installation. The energy plant installation follows the completion of structural works for the new building, with all building facade components also installed. Once complete, the upgraded Geraldton Health Campus will feature an expanded emergency department, a new intensive care unit and a high-dependency unit, as well as an integrated mental health service comprising an adult mental health inpatient unit and a mental health short-stay unit.

Construction is now progressing on masonry, structural steel ceiling and surfaces for the new acute mental health unit. The final roof slabs have also been poured for the expanded emergency department, allowing for glazing and cladding work on the external and internal walls to begin. The Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment continues to create jobs for locals, with more than $10 million in contracts awarded to Mid West businesses.

The arrival of the WA-made energy modules is a great example of how we are using smart engineering to deliver complex health infrastructure more efficiently. We are creating a facility that builds for the future, and this milestone brings us closer to delivering an upgraded health campus that supports better access to health care for people in the Mid West. This multimillion dollar project is the biggest redevelopment of the hospital since the early 2000s and is set to open next year. It will bring together the latest in healthcare technology, infrastructure and patient-centred design to enhance patients' healthcare experiences. This is part of our ambitious $3.2 billion health infrastructure program, which includes a number of major hospital upgrades in regional Western Australia.
