Ortho Sistas—MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins

Statement

Mr Yaz Mubarakai (Oakford—Parliamentary Secretary) (12:47 pm): I rise today to highlight the incredible work of the cycling team Ortho Sistas. Since 2014, the Ortho Sistas have participated in the annual MACA Cancer 200 Ride for the Perkins, a 200-kilometre fundraising bike ride to fund cancer research at Western Australia's Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. This year it reached an extraordinary milestone; it has raised a cumulative total of $1 million!

On 4 October, the riders kicked off from South Perth. The route took them all the way to Mandurah for an overnight stay. Then they went all the way back to Optus Stadium. From my experience of completing this ride with the team, half in 2021 and the full ride in 2022, I remember how arduous the journey can be for anyone doing it for the first time. The sense of community that I felt riding alongside the Ortho Sistas is unmatched and I could not have completed the journey without their support. I wear this medal very proudly.

Cancer has devastating effects on our families and communities. I congratulate all the riders for their dedication and hard work in the fight to end cancer for good. I would like to give a shout-out to team captain Suzanne Philpot, and the other riders who are present alongside her in the Speaker's gallery today: Sarah Kennedy, Stephanie Moore, David Philpot, Raveesh John, Princy Skariah, Victor Powell, Victor Powell, Graham Morrow, Anne O'Leary, Patrick O'Leary, Sam Gibson, David Carter, Jeanne Young, Wendy Ensell and Brian Ensell. Thank you.
