Daylight saving
30. Hon Wilson Tucker to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:
I congratulate Hon Roger Cook on his re-election and acknowledge the government's vision to make Western Australia the healthiest state in the nation. I also refer to Australia's first nationwide survey on daylight saving, conducted by the University of Queensland, which found it is the preferred option with majority support by Western Australians. The report concludes that occupation and lifestyle not geography are the key drivers of this preference.
Will daylight saving be part of the Cook Labor government's agenda in the 42nd Parliament and, if not, can the Premier clarify what evidence or rationale overrides this clear public preference, which aligns with the government's own health and wellbeing goals?
Hon Stephen Dawson replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question, and I do appreciate that he continues to try. However, I am pleased to point out that Seattle does have daylight saving time, so maybe that is something to keep in mind.
The answer to the question at hand is no. Western Australians voted to reject the introduction of daylight saving in Western Australia in the 2009 daylight saving referendum.
