The President (Hon Alanna Clohesy) (11:48 am): Members, we now move to the election of Chair of Committees. I announce that there is a vacancy in the office of Chair of Committees. I call for nominations.

That Hon Steve Martin be elected Chair of Committees.

Hon Stephen Dawson (Leader of the House) (11:48 am): I formally second the motion.

Hon Steve Martin (11:49 am): President, I submit myself to the will of the house.
The President: Are there any further nominations? There being no further nominations, I declare Hon Steve Martin elected as Chair of Committees.

The President: Member, do you wish to make a brief statement?
Hon Steve Martin: President, I start by congratulating you on your election earlier today, and I thank all members for allowing me the great honour of serving as a Deputy President and Chair of Committees for the 42nd Parliament. I hope to contribute to the fair and smooth running of this chamber and play my part in upholding the customs, rights and privileges of the Legislative Council. As the Governor said this morning, democracy does not just happen. This place plays a key role in making sure it happens in WA. Congratulations to the new members who were sworn in today, and I wish all members the very best for the 42nd Parliament. Thank you.
