Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital—Water leakage
483. Hon Tjorn Sibma to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health Infrastructure:
I refer to recent staff reports of water leaks and damage at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
(1) Is the minister aware of the extent of black mould contamination at the hospital, and what specific actions have been taken to remediate it?
(2) Is the minister aware that staff have lodged health complaints about this black mould outbreak?
(3) What specific action is the minister taking to address the rising number of roof leaks caused by rain at the hospital each winter, including leaks in both the intensive care unit and adjacent to theatres 9 and 10?
(4) Does the minister accept that expensive imaging equipment has been placed at risk as a direct result of water leakage within the hospital?
Hon Dr Katrina Stratton replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) The Department of Health advises that when any surface mould is detected, the hospital works to remove it. Air quality testing is always undertaken to test whether black mould spores are present. From June 2023 to June 2025, air quality testing has not detected any incidence of black mould spores in the air.
(3)–(4) The state government continues to manage maintenance as required. The department undertakes urgent maintenance works and remediates works swiftly in cases such as water leaks. There is no evidence that imaging equipment has been placed at risk.
