Road crash data—Office of Road Safety
487. Hon Julie Freeman to the minister representing the Minister for Road Safety:
I refer to the reporting of road crash data to the Office of Road Safety.
(1) Which department or agency is responsible for collecting and providing road crash data to the Office of Road Safety?
(2) How frequently is this data reported?
(3) Does the reported data include information about the causation of crashes?
(4) Specifically, does the data capture whether alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in a crash?
Hon Matthew Swinbourn replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Road Safety.
(1) Main Roads Western Australia collects and compiles the state's crash data from information received from the Insurance Commission of WA, Commissioner of Police, Main Roads—all killed or seriously injured crashes—and WA Police for fatalities for the current year. Both provide data to the federal Office of Road Safety.
(2) Main Roads WA reports KSI data annually. WA Police reports fatality data monthly.
(3) Yes, where available, suspected causes are included in the reported data.
(4) No.
