Former members of Parliament—Board appointments
490. Hon Tim Clifford to the Leader of the House representing the Premier:
(1) Why did the government halve the wait-time before politicians leaving Parliament can join government boards?
(2) Can the government table any advice that informed their reasoning?
(3) Is the minister aware that former ministers Sue Ellery and Bill Johnston are now eligible to be paid in board positions while still within the nine-month period of their transitional allowance?
Hon Stephen Dawson replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) Guidelines for government board appointments are issued by way of a Premier's circular. Every four years after each election it is customary for the Department of the Premier and Cabinet to review all Premier's circulars. Following a review of circulars this year, a decision was made to reduce the transition period for the remuneration of former MPs on boards from 12 months to six months. This decision was made following considerations over the changing nature of political careers. Former MPs bring unique experience, perspective and skills to the wide variety of state government boards and committees.
