Firearms Act
Petition
Hon Dr Brian Walker (1:03 pm): I present an e-petition containing 20,669 signatures, couched in the following terms:
To the President and Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled. We the undersigned …
Noting the referral of the Firearms Act 2024 to the Standing Committee on Legislation in May 2025; and, Noting the reasons given for that referral, including the serious concerns held by numerous Members as to the lack of scrutiny which this important piece of legislation received in the course of the 41st Parliament; And fearing the potential for the continued application of this legislation during what may well prove to be a lengthy review period, Call upon the Legislative Council to- (a) initiate or support a motion to suspend the operational enforcement of the Firearms Act 2024 pending completion of the current review; (b) advocate for a temporary freeze on WA Police administrative directives and enforcement relating to new license compliance, again pending completion of the current review; and, (c) do all that it can to encourage the Cook Labor Government to instigate an independent legal audit of WA Police's application of any and all transitional provisions under the 2024 Act.
And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
