Coroners Act—Statutory review report
583. Hon Nick Goiran to the parliamentary secretary representing the Attorney General:
I refer to my question without notice asked on 16 August 2022 regarding the most recent statutory review of the Coroners Act 1996.
(1) Has the next review of the act commenced?
(2) When is this next review expected to be completed?
(3) Is the Attorney General aware that the practice of post-mortem examinations being provided to hospitals ceased in December 2020?
(4) Is the Attorney General aware that his predecessor stated he would bring legislative provisions addressing this issue to Parliament?
(5) Will the Attorney General do so, and if so, when?
Hon Dan Caddy replied:
I thank the member for the question and note that the answers are provided as of Tuesday 19 August.
(1) No.
(2) As soon as practicable.
(3) Yes.
(4) Yes.
(5) Work to draft a new coroners bill, which would repeal and replace the Coroners Act 1996, is ongoing. Timing of the introduction of bills is a matter for cabinet.
