Coal-fired power stations—Collie
588. Hon Rod Caddies to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation:
I refer to the carbon emissions produced by Collie coal-fired electricity plants.
(1) What percentage of global carbon emissions result from the burning of coal for electricity generation in Western Australia?
(2) By what percentage will global carbon emissions reduce if the government closes WA coal-fired power stations in 2029, taking into consideration increased gas electricity generation?
Hon Stephen Dawson replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) Based on data published by the International Energy Agency and the European Commission, this is estimated to equate to approximately 0.012% of global emissions or 0.051% of global coal-related emissions. Coal-fired power generation contributed to approximately 7.4% of Western Australia's emissions in 2023.
(2) By 2029, when state-owned coal plants in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) are expected to be retired, annual emissions in the SWIS are expected to reduce by around four million tonnes a year compared with 2024. This represents a global reduction of around 0.008% based on 2023 global emissions.
