Regional road safety program

616. Hon Julie Freeman to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:

I refer to the $125 million expansion of the Regional Road Safety Program to local roads in the 2025–26 budget.

(1) On what date did the state government first propose or request an equal funding contribution from the Commonwealth government?

(2) Can the minister table the formal request made to the Commonwealth government, along with any response received?

(3) Has the Commonwealth government indicated whether it will match the state's $125 million commitment?

(4) If no to (3), noting that the $125 million commitment falls very short of the $552 million requested by the Western Australian Local Government Association and the RAC to cover high-risk roads identified as in need of urgent upgrades, will the state government commit extra funding to program?

The President: Reference standing order 105A.

Hon Samantha Rowe replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following the answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.

(1)–(4) The Deputy Premier wrote to Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, on 27 March 2024. Discussions are ongoing with the federal government.
