Police—Wrongful identification

629. Hon Nick Goiran to the minister representing the Minister for Police:

I refer to the answer on 20 May 2025 to my question without notice 180 which revealed that another case of wrongful identification by WA police occurred on 4 October 2023.

(1) What were the circumstances surrounding this case?

(2) Was this person held in custody, and if so, for how long?

(3) What was the outcome of this case, and was disciplinary action taken?

(4) Was this case referred to the Corruption and Crime Commission?

Hon Matthew Swinbourn replied:

I thank the member for some notice of the question. This answer was prepared on 27 May 2025 and has been provided to me by the Minister for Police.

(1) At 1:25 pm on 4 October 2023, police attended and investigated a family violence incident in Canning Vale. As a result of the information, police attended an address in Warnbro, where the suspect was believed to reside. Further inquiries ascertained the arrested person was not a suspect involved in the incident.

(2) Yes, a person was held in custody for 31 minutes.

(3) The officers involved were subject to disciplinary action, with both receiving verbal guidance in relation to this matter.

(4) Yes.
