Cancer—Daffodil Day

Statement

Hon Dr Katrina Stratton (Parliamentary Secretary) (5:26 pm): I rise to make a very brief contribution this evening. I acknowledge that today is Daffodil Day and that the Cancer Council of Australia, through Daffodil Day, raises essential funds for medical research. Tuesday was the third anniversary of my Oliver and Kate losing their Granny Joan and of me losing my mother-in-law, a woman whom I knew and loved for more than half my life. She died from stomach cancer. She was ill for about 18 months. She had most of her stomach removed. She had chemotherapy. She spent the last weeks of her life in palliative care at St John of God Subiaco Hospital. I note that a number of us are wearing the yellow daffodil pins today. I think it is probably safe to assume that most of us in this chamber will have been touched by cancer at some point and will have lost people whom we loved dearly to cancer. I rise to acknowledge the memory and love that we hold for those we have lost, and also to thank the doctors, nurses, specialists, social workers, psychologists and medical researchers who work so hard in this space to improve the care and outcomes for those experiencing a cancer journey.
