Forest Products Commission and Water Corporation—Local government rates

684. Hon Dr Steve Thomas to the Minister for Forestry:

I refer to the purchase and lease of property by the Forest Products Commission and the Water Corporation for the purpose of growing pine plantations.

(1) Does the Forest Products Commission pay local government rates for the land it:

(a) purchases for the growing of pine trees; or

(b) leases for the growing of pine trees?

(2) If no to (1), why not?

(3) Does the Water Corporation pay local government rates for the land it:

(a) purchases for the growing of pine trees; or

(b) leases for the growing of pine trees?

(4) If yes to (3), why does the corporation pay shire rates if the Forest Products Commission does not?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) (a) No.

(b) Yes.

(2) Under clause 43(2) of the Forest Products Act 2000, land held by the Forest Products Commission is not rateable land for the purposes of the Local Government Act 1995.

(3)–(4) Please direct these questions to the Minister for Water.
