Max Kewish—Busselton Croquet Club
Statement
Hon Dr Steve Thomas (9:01 pm): I will be very quick. Every now and again in Parliament it is a joy to celebrate a great community contributor. Tonight I would like to mention someone who has become a legend in the South West in the sport of croquet. I do not know a lot about the sport of croquet, although I have to tell members that I suspect the temptation to misuse those mallets might be somewhat extreme. It is a great occupation. It is a great sport for people to get involved in.
I want to celebrate a particular person, and his name is Max Kewish, a legend of the South West and Western Australia and, in fact, Croquet Australia. Max was honoured by his local Busselton Croquet Club on 24 October, and I had the joy of presenting him with his certificate. He was the first person to be put on the honour board at the Busselton Croquet Club. Max started in Dunsborough. He was introduced to croquet by his first wife, who sadly passed on, and he used croquet as a way to interact with his community and give back. He went from starting in croquet to coaching croquet. He became a president of his local croquet association. He became a state president, and he moved on to the national association. Max was responsible for bringing the Over 50s Croquet World Championships to Busselton. Congratulations, Max. You are an absolute legend of the game. I will very briefly read in the certificate that he was granted. It states:
… TO
MAX KEWISH—
Of Busselton—
FOR SHOWING OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP IN ALL FORMS OF THE GAME OF
CROQUET INCLUDING PLAYING, COACHING, SETTING UP NEW CLUBS,
COMMITTEE REPRESENTATION AND
HELPING TO BRING THE WORLD OVER 50s CHAMPIONSHIPS TO WA.
It is great to see people engage at that level. It is great to see people invest in their community. Max Kewish is a magnificent human individual and a great person in his sport, and I am sure he has never hit anybody with a mallet in his entire life! He did tell some interesting stories when he accepted his award. I cannot repeat any of those even with parliamentary privilege. Congratulations, Max. It is fantastic to see your contribution to your community.
