South West Interconnected System—Whole-of-system plan

1015. Hon Dr Steve Thomasto theLeader of the House representing the Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation:

I refer to the state government's utter inability to deliver the updated South West Interconnected System whole-of-system plan by the end of September 2025. It might be a Thursday!

(1) Did the government commit to delivering an update to the plan in 2023 following its announcement in 2022 of the closure of coal-fired power stations under its energy transition?

(2) Did the government utterly fail to deliver that proposed update?

(3) Did the government then publicly advise that it would deliver the update by the legislated time of 30 September 2025?

(4) Has the government now utterly failed again to deliver in this second timeframe and set a new proposed delivery timeframe of 30 September 2027?

(5) Why did the government try to hide this latest failure instead of being honest with the WA community?

Hon Stephen Dawson replied:

That was a very long question. I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation.

(1)–(5) In response to feedback from industry requesting a tangible plan on the timeframes and locations of new transmission infrastructure, the government released the South West Interconnected System Transmission Plan: Powering our state's future in September 2025. The next whole-of-system plan (WOSP) will be delivered by 30 September 2027, consistent with the recent update to the Electricity System and Market Rules.
