Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 41 asked in the Legislative Council on 23 March 2010 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Parliament: 38 Session: 1

JANDAKOT AIRPORT — RUNWAYS EXTENSION

41. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Planning:

I refer to questions on notice 1268 and 1266 regarding the proposed expansion of Jandakot Airport.

(1) How will the building of the fourth runway impact on the residents of the Cities of Cockburn, Melville and Canning?

(2) How and when will the noise amelioration and property resumption program that will be required as part of the proposed expansion be funded?

(3) Can the minister confirm who is responsible for noise amelioration in the affected areas and for action to be taken to address noise pollution in the vicinity?

(4) To what degree will further plans to increase the use of heavier aircraft compound the already existing noise pollution in the area?

(5) How will the plans being considered for the future use of pure jet aircraft impact on noise pollution for residents in these cities?

Hon ROBYN McSWEENEY replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.

(1) Jandakot Airport Holdings has prepared a revised Australian noise exposure forecast that shows the potential noise impacts on surrounding areas. The revised ANEF has been forwarded by Jandakot Airport Holdings to Hon Anthony Albanese, MP, federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, for his approval as the state government has no legislative control over development on land owned by the federal government. On 19 March 2010 Minister Albanese approved the aviation part of the master plan but passed final approval of communal activities at the airport to Hon Peter Garrett, MP, Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts.

(2) This question should be directed to Hon Anthony Albanese, MP.

(3) The federal minister is responsible for any noise mitigation works undertaken in relation to airports owned by the federal government.

(4) As per the answer to question (1), the potential increase in air traffic at the airport will be reflected in the revised ANEF.

(5) Please refer to answers (1) and (4).
