Question On Notice No. 2155 asked in the Legislative Council on 23 October 2014 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Question Directed to the: Parliamentary Secretary representing the Minister for Transport
Parliament: 39 Session: 1

Question

(1) What training and education is provided to drivers of Transperth buses on driving safely around cyclists?
(2) What risks are Transperth drivers made aware of when passing cyclists?
(3) How often is the training and education in (1) reinforced for each Transperth driver?

Answered on 17 February 2015

(1) Training provided by Transperth service providers is based on the Competency Standard from the Department of Transport "Heavy Vehicle Driving Competency for HR Class Licensed Drivers".

(2) In the defensive training techniques module, drivers are taken through the risks of changing lanes without due care and passing too close to other vehicles and cyclists. Further training and guidance is provided for drivers to remain vigilant and alert to other road users, including cyclists who do not comply with the traffic laws.

(3) Training is provided at the induction training for every driver, then every two years during refresher training.
