Question Directed to the: Minister for Mental Health representing the Minister for Environment
Parliament: 39 Session: 1
Tabled Paper No: 1850- View tabled paper

Question

(1) For what vegetation types does the Department of Parks and Wildlife have tables for the rate of litter accumulation?
(2) What are the dates of the most recent tables?
(3) Will the Minister please table the tables showing the rate of litter accumulation for all vegetation types for which such tables have been developed?

Answered on 11 September 2014

(1) The Forest Fire Behaviour Tables for Western Australia tabulate the rate of litter accumulation in forests dominated by jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata), karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) and wandoo (Eucalyptus wandoo) based on the number of annual leaf falls and the percentage canopy cover (jarrah and karri forest) or stand basal area (wandoo forest). The relationship between litter depth and weight (in tonnes per ha) is also tabulated for native forests of karri, jarrah, wandoo, mixed stands of karri, jarrah and marri (Corymbia calophylla), and plantations of exotic Pinus pinaster and Pinus radiata.

(2) The most recent edition of the Forest Fire Behaviour Tables for Western Australia is dated 2011. The litter accumulation tables have remained unchanged since the 1985 edition.
