Question Without Notice No. 578 asked in the Legislative Council on 19 August 2010 by Hon Lynn Maclaren
Parliament: 38 Session: 1
SOUTH WEST KARRI AND JARRAH FORESTS — MINING
578. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Tourism:
I refer to plans by Bauxite Resources Ltd to mine bauxite for a new alumina refinery in the state’s south west karri and jarrah forests.
(1) Are the areas of Bridgetown, Nannup, Manjimup and Pemberton considered to be prime tourist destinations in the south west?
(2) Is the minister aware of BRL’s tenement applications to mine bauxite in the areas surrounding Bridgetown, Nannup, Manjimup and Pemberton?
(3) If yes to (2), is the minister concerned that logging of native forests to establish the mines and their infrastructure in these tourist destinations will have a negative impact on the local tourism industry?
Hon MICHAEL MISCHIN replied:
I thank the member for some notice of this question. I present this answer on behalf of the minister representing the Minister for Tourism.
(1) Yes.
(2)-(3) No. I do not have jurisdiction over mining matters.
