Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 30 asked in the Legislative Council on 31 March 2005 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Parliament: 37 Session: 1

ROE HIGHWAY STAGE 8, BEELIAR WETLANDS

30. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure:

(1) Is the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure aware that the Environmental Protection Authority assessment, the Freight Network Review, the October 2004 Murdoch University report and the Metropolitan Nyoongar Council of Elders recommend that Roe Highway stage 8 not go ahead along the existing road through the Beeliar wetlands?

(2) Does the minister support the election promise made by Hon Jim McGinty at a Fremantle forum in February that Roe Highway stage 8 would not go ahead through the wetlands but stop at Kwinana Freeway?

(3) Will the road reserve between North Lake and Bibra Lake be deleted from the metropolitan region scheme?

(4) If yes, when?

(5) If no, why not?

Hon KEN TRAVERS replied:

I thank the honourable member. I welcome her first question. I have the honour of being able to answer it.

(1) Yes.

(2) Yes.

(3)-(5) The federal government has refused to provide funding for Roe Highway stage 7 unless we keep the area reserved. The minister believes it is about time the Greens (WA) gave the government credit for deleting the Fremantle eastern bypass and refocusing freight transport planning for greater sustainability.

Several members interjected.

The PRESIDENT: Order, members!
