Question Directed to the: Minister for Environment representing the Minister for Tourism
Parliament: 38 Session: 1

Question
In reference to the Budget Statements, Budget Paper No. 2 volume two, I ask -
(1) Page 397, Significant Issues Impacting the Agency states that, the Western Australian tourism industry generates over 82 000 jobs and injects $7.3 billion into the Western Australian economy, -

(a) how many of these jobs are in regional tourism;

(b) how much of the $7.3 billion was generated from regional tourism;

(c) how many of these jobs are in indigenous tourism; and

(d) how much money was generated from indigenous tourism?

(2) How much Government funding has been allocated over the next four years to the development of the James Price Point Gas Hub compared to funding for the development of tourism in the Kimberley?

(3) What level of funding assistance is to be provided to Indigenous tourism businesses in the Kimberley over the next four years, bearing in mind that there are already over 500 Indigenous people employed in tourism in the region and over 20 Indigenous tourism businesses?

(4) Page 403, Details of Controlled Grants and Subsidies, lists the Gormley Installation-Lake Ballard, Indigenous Employment, and Regional Tourism Organisations and an estimated actual for each project in 2008-2009. Why are there no forward estimates for these projects?

Answered on 2 December 2010

(1) Thirty four percent or approximately 28 000 jobs are in regional tourism which equates to approximately $2.5 billion (Source Access Economics, Tourism Satellite Account, 2007/08).

The information requested on Indigenous tourism is not available at a state or national level. Tourism Western Australia asked the Australian Government Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism to explore whether it was possible to extrapolate this information from its data sources, however, it has confirmed this data is not available.

(2) Information on the gas hub at James Price Point should be requested from the relevant Minister -- Minister for State Development. As indicated in my response to question on notice 2580, Tourism Western Australia is concentrating on 15 significant tourism development projects across the State. However, it is not possible to break budget allocations down by region.

(3) Tourism Western Australia does not provide funding assistance programs to tourism businesses. Its role is to market the State as a competitive tourist destination; develop, attract and market major events; and work on significant tourism infrastructure and development projects with relevant departments and agencies. Tourism Western Australia does provide $440 000 per year (2010/11 to 2012/13) to the Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Committee to implement marketing activities that Indigenous tourism operators and communities with commercial product can participate in.

The Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) provides free independent guidance and information to small business owners.  The SBDC has taken on the responsibility of providing support for Indigenous and small tourism businesses and, with more resources and a broader reach through 20 small business centres, is well placed to support the tourism industry's needs.

(4) Because these non recurrent grants/subsidies have been completed.
