Question
I refer to the transport of Magellan Metals lead carbonate through Fremantle Port, and I ask -
(1) Please describe the monitoring process within the sea containers transporting lead carbonate, from the Magellan Wiluna mine to Fremantle Port?

(2) What are the specifications of the sea containers used for the export of lead?

(3) What was the frequency of readings taken?

(4) What are the results of this monitoring?

Answered on 5 April 2011

(1) Air monitoring for lead dust is conducted as outlined in Section 4 of Magellan's Health Hygiene and Environmental Monitoring Program.

(2) Statement 783 issued on 3 February 2009 and the interim conditions approved on 23 February 2011 require that the containers are locked. Shipping container construction is specified by state, international and national codes. State specifications are administered through the Department of Mines and Petroleum.

(3) 1% of shipping containers are monitored as outlined in the Health Hygiene and Environmental Monitoring Program. The interim condition now require dust monitors be placed at a frequency of 1% of shipping containers averaged over a quarter of a calendar year.

(4) The results are publicly available on the Magellan Metals website however, for ease of reference, [see tabled paper no].
