MODIFIED CANOLA — SPILL CLEAN-UP
779. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the
Minister for Transport:
I refer to roadside maintenance and the clean-up of the spill
of approximately 15 tonnes of GM canola on the Albany Highway just north of
Williams on 9 August 2011.
(1) Who conducted the clean-up after the spill?
(2) How were the spilled grain and roadside soil and gravel
affected by the spill disposed of?
(3) What vehicles and/or machinery were used in the clean-up
process?
(4) What route did these vehicles or the machinery take after
the completion of the clean-up operation?
(5) What
herbicides have been applied to the 10 kilometres of Albany Highway north of
Williams over the past two years?
(6) Does Main
Roads have a Monsanto licence to cultivate GM canola on its roadside reserves?

Although I do have an answer for that!
I thank the member for notice of the question. Main Roads WA
advises —
(1) In the
first instance, Co-operative Bulk Handling Ltd Narrakine; subsequently,
Leighton, Narrogin Plant Hire and Wagin Earthmoving under Main Roads'
direction.
(2) It was disposed of at the CBH bin at Yornaning.
(3) A truck and trailer, a large loader and a bobcat were
used in the clean-up operation.
(4) Albany Highway and then Williams–Kondinin Road to
Narrogin.
(5) Glyphosate.
(6) No.
