Parliamentary Questions

Question Without Notice No. 779 asked in the Legislative Council on 16 October 2012 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Parliament: 38 Session: 1

GENETICALLY MODIFIED CANOLA — SPILL CLEAN-UP

779. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:

I refer to roadside maintenance and the clean-up of the spill of approximately 15 tonnes of GM canola on the Albany Highway just north of Williams on 9 August 2011.

(1) Who conducted the clean-up after the spill?

(2) How were the spilled grain and roadside soil and gravel affected by the spill disposed of?

(3) What vehicles and/or machinery were used in the clean-up process?

(4) What route did these vehicles or the machinery take after the completion of the clean-up operation?

(5) What herbicides have been applied to the 10 kilometres of Albany Highway north of Williams over the past two years?

(6) Does Main Roads have a Monsanto licence to cultivate GM canola on its roadside reserves?

The PRESIDENT: I am not quite sure that the last part of that question falls under the province of the minister!

Hon SIMON O'BRIEN replied:

Although I do have an answer for that!

I thank the member for notice of the question. Main Roads WA advises —

(1) In the first instance, Co-operative Bulk Handling Ltd Narrakine; subsequently, Leighton, Narrogin Plant Hire and Wagin Earthmoving under Main Roads' direction.

(2) It was disposed of at the CBH bin at Yornaning.

(3) A truck and trailer, a large loader and a bobcat were used in the clean-up operation.

(4) Albany Highway and then Williams–Kondinin Road to Narrogin.

(5) Glyphosate.

(6) No.
