Parliament: 38 Session: 1

HIGH STREET–STIRLING HIGHWAY INTERSECTION — TRAFFIC NOISE IMPACT

802. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:

(1) Is the minister aware of the recent World Health Organization report “Burden of Disease from Environmental Noise”, which states that road traffic noise has been shown to increase the risk of high blood pressure and ischaemic heart disease?

(2) Which road intersection is currently the noisiest in the Perth metropolitan area?

(3) What studies have been conducted looking at the potential noise impacts of the High Street–Stirling Highway intersection, and will the minister table these?

(4) Have any studies looked at the overall noise impact of option 4 on the Gibson Park precinct and surrounds?

(5) If yes to (3), will the minister table these?

Hon SIMON O’BRIEN replied:

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. I am provided with this answer by the Minister for Transport.

(1) Yes. The report “Burden of Disease from Environmental Noise” was published by the World Health Organization in 2011. The report was prepared to assist the European Union to develop noise and health policies.

(2) Main Roads does not generally maintain noise information on individual road intersections across the road network.

(3)–(4) A noise study was undertaken as part of the initial planning for the High Street upgrade.

(5) No.
