STATE FORESTS — NUMBAT HABITATS
945. Hon LYNN MacLAREN
to the minister representing the Minister for Forestry:
How much of the jarrah, marri and wandoo forests, which are
the primary habitats for numbats, has been logged over the past four years in
Western Australia?
Hon
KEN BASTON replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
Only parts of the jarrah, wandoo and marri forests are
habitats for numbats, most of which are in reserves or other areas that are
excluded from timber harvesting. In each harvest area, assessments are
undertaken to identify the likelihood of a particular species of fauna, including
numbats, being present, and to determine appropriate management requirements.
However, data on the area of forest available for harvest that provides
habitats for numbats is not available at short notice.
