Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 5764 asked in the Legislative Council on 26 June 2012 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Question Directed to the: Minister for Finance representing the Minister for Transport
Parliament: 38 Session: 1

Question

I refer to my question without notice No. 343 on 12 June 2012, and I ask has the Minister's department provided advice to Treasury in this or any previous Government —
                  (a) on the impact of introducing a stamp duty concession for low emission vehicles, and if so, what was that advice; and
                  (b) on the effect of introducing a tax on high emission vehicles, similar to the tax on luxury vehicles, and if so, what was that advice?
Answered on 11 September 2012

The Department of Transport advises:

(a-b) The Department of Treasury has from time to time sought information from the Department of Transport with regard to consideration of potential tax incentives for low emission vehicles, including for the previous Government's State Tax Review and the current Government's submission to the Review of Australia's Future Tax System (that is, the Henry Review), each of which is publicly available.  The information sought related primarily to vehicle registration data to assist in the Department of Treasury's analysis rather than policy advice.
