Parliamentary Questions

Question On Notice No. 1432 asked in the Legislative Council on 1 December 2009 by Hon Lynn Maclaren

Question Directed to the: Minister for Environment
Parliament: 38 Session: 1

Question
(1) Is the Minister aware of the community group known as Preserve Point Peron for the People (PPP), which includes 3 444 members?
(2) Has the Minister been advised that this group believes the ‘Cape Peron Tourist Precinct’, will entail the construction of canals, luxury housing and hotels and an inland marina at Point Peron?

(3) Is the Minister aware of concerns that such a proposal is likely to, -

(a) result in the loss of a large area of healthy seagrass;

(b) threaten the Thrombolite community at nearby Lake Richmond;

(c) require the sale of public land (including a Bush Forever site); and

(d) require the sale of a large section of Rockingham Lakes Regional Park for high rise apartments and car parks?

Answered on 1 April 2010

(1)-(3) The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) provided advice on the environmental values of the area and on earlier marina concepts in October 2006 (EPA Report 1237). The EPA also provided advice about environmental studies that would need to be undertaken. Values identified by the EPA included seagrass and water quality, Lake Richmond and terrestrial vegetation, along with the need to consider the whole of the Cape Peron area.

The EPA has advised me it has not yet received a detailed proposal for the Cape Peron Marina project. The EPA has foreshadowed that when a detailed proposal is developed it will require environmental impact assessment which will include a period of public review where submissions can be made to the EPA.
