HIGH STREET–STIRLING HIGHWAY INTERSECTION
626. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the minister representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the proposed upgrade of the intersection of High Street and Stirling Highway in Fremantle.
(1) How many hectares of the Fremantle Public Golf Course will be destroyed by option 4?
(2) How many mature trees along High Street will be destroyed by option 4?
(3) When does traffic modelling predict that the Stirling Highway at this point will need to be upgraded to six lanes?
(4) Does traffic modelling predict that the Stirling Bridge will also need to be upgraded to six lanes; and has the government calculated the likely cost of this?
(5) What is the predicted cost of all the planned road upgrades along the High Street–Stirling Highway corridor in the next 20 years?
Hon SIMON O’BRIEN replied:
I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question.
(1) Two hectares of the Fremantle Public Golf Course are needed for option 4.
(2) Refer to question without notice 607, part (3).
(3) Traffic modelling shows a level of traffic in 20 to 25 years that would warrant a six-lane road.
(4) Additional bridge capacity over the Swan River will be needed in the next two to three decades. This has not been factored into the High Street upgrading project, because any cost would have no relevance to the current project.
(5) The state government is focusing on actual needs in 2011, and the High Street upgrading project will address the critical noise, safety and freight efficiency issues.
